How Safe is Downtown Atlanta


The word ‘safe’ as explained by the English dictionary means, protected from or not exposed to danger or risk; not likely to be harmed or lost. So, how ‘safe’ is Atlanta? How sheltered are you to danger and/or risk there? What is the likelihood of you getting harmed in the most famous city in Georgia? Or how shielded are you from predators in the city?

Atlanta is the capital of the U.S. state Georgia and it is the most populous city in the state, home to 5.8 million people. It is the ninth largest metropolitan area in the United States, and has the world’s seventh busiest city airport in terms of passenger traffic yearly (103,902,992). A city that has endured through torrid times of war, floods, and droughts, has rebuilt itself better than most cities. Due to its history and southern culture, Atlanta has been used as the backdrop for many films and television shows. However it is essential to take necessary precautions to completely enjoy your stay in the city of Atlanta.

Below are some of the information you would need to know when you visit Atlanta.


Cautions and Hazards

General Risk

Just like every other big city, there are some areas one should avoid when visiting. Locals and online guides recommend visitors should stay away from Southern Atlanta, which includes the Bluff, Grant Park, and the I-20 as these are areas where u find sketchy characters, with significant amount of illegal and dangerous activities going on, and no tourist attraction close by. East Atlanta is also another disreputable area that should be avoided.  Also, gang activity is visible at Kirkwood, the northeast part of Atlanta.

The unsafe areas far away from any tourist attraction, and have little or nothing that are appealing to visitors and tourists. A large percentage of crimes that occur in Atlanta are between individuals who know themselves, or in the aforementioned areas of the city. General risk level is medium.


Transport Risk

Public transport is somewhat safe. The risk level is medium, this is due to sketchy characters that hang around late at night. It is best one travels in groups of two or more at night, stay alert, try to use common sense and not get directly involved in any brawls going on.


Fraud or Scam risk

The risk level is medium. Like every other touristic place, there would be people around trying to swindle you through devious means like: fake petitions, “gold ring” trick etc. Try not to leave your card out of sight, and withdraw money from respectable banks and hotels, because credit card scams are quite common.


Pickpockets and Mugging Risk

The risk level is medium. The pickpockets and bag/purse snatchers are always on the prowl in tourist locations, remain vigilant and keep your belongings on your person, do not leave your bags or other items unattended.

Perpetrators of mugging tend to use force leaving most victims physically injured, just in case you are being robbed do not resist.


Other Risks

There are occasional earthquakes, tornados, and floods.

Women traveler risk is low and many women travel without any safety issues.

There is a low terrorist risk in Atlanta but don’t rule this out. Try to remain cautious and vigilant and take advice given by authorities.



In a big city like this hoodlums and criminals tend to use the opportunity to harass unsuspecting people. Or you might just be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Overall Atlanta is 57% safe.
